does anyone know any website that are for building a home inside a steel building i have seen where some people will make a home at the back of the building and use the front for cars or airplanes i dont really need that much space for living but id like alot of space for cars what is the cheapest steel structure out there?
There are a number of reasons why what you are proposing is not that great of an idea. For one thing, there are exhaust gases and even deadly fumes from various chemical and petroleum products as well as carbon monoxide associated with vehicles that aren’t healthy to be around 24/7, not to mention flammability issues. Also, there are specific building fire codes required for vehicle storage structures that are different from residential codes. Some urban areas will not even permit dwelling unit occupancy inside garage spaces so you have to talk to your local inspection authority about the codes in your town. Even if you are permitted to put a residence in the same space as a large garage you typically need to have separate air exchange systems and fire barriers between the spaces. Not saying you can’t do it but, it would be simpler, cheaper and safer to build a separate steel or wooden pole barn with a walkway connecting it to a separate living unit. I do know a couple of folks who have apartments over their commercial garages but then you have to construct a building with a frame that can withstand the second floor load. And those that I know about are out in rural areas where building codes are more relaxed.
Manufactured steel buildings are quite expensive. The cost depends a good deal on your geographic region and how much prep the site would require so I can’t quote you numbers. I’d suggest you request a quote from a builder of such structures in your area — they are usually glad to give you an approximate cost at no charge.
It would be more economical to build a CMU (concrete block) wall structure with bar joist roof or a wooden engineered truss pole barn.
Oddly enough, I often see people post this question on here, usually young men. Is there some popular movie or TV show where the hero lives in a set-up like this?
NOTE: You can take Bonno’s Libertarian advice (answer above mine) if you feel like gambling, but good luck getting property or liability insurance, let alone a construction loan. You could lose everything to disaster or to the taxman in the end. I worked with another electrician years ago and he and his dad did that — built a structure they reported as a "barn" but they built jet-fuel powered drag trucks and other race vehicles inside. They avoided the taxman but couldn’t get insurance on the building or contents due to the deception. It caught fire and burned to the ground because it was too far from the water source for the VFD pumper. They lost a quarter million dollars worth of vehicles, tools and the building. His dad was so distraught about the loss that he had a heart attack and became disabled, dying within 18 months. The son was never able to raise enough money to get back into the racing scene.
put in your underground plumbing…& finish the metal building first. Take several sets of picture of the inside empty & with your digital camera on future dates ( reset the calender forward )take several shots empty. close the door & cover the windows & never let anyone ( nazi’s ) from the appraisal district in there. The pictures with future dates are your evidence of nothing inside. build your space insulate & cover the exterior & flat ceiling ( of the space )with osb board so mice are held at bay. stack hay bales to hide your structure from far away glances & park a tractor prominently in front of the door. it’s a barn act like it’s one…buy & park a really cheap/small mobile home to be your primary residence. Property Taxes in Texas are murder ( no income tax ) 6.25 % state sales & up to two% city sales tax.
http://www.mortonbuildings.com has some pics. I’ve worked on a few steel building homes they’re nice and look just as good as any other home.
